This past Friday, March 23rd, UCR Extension hosted an exhibition of student work from "All the World's a Stage: Introduction to Street Photography," a class taught by Eric Kim . Some of Eric's photos were also on display. It is taught using a hybrid format, with some face-to-face meetings and some online work. Back in August, I was listening to The Candid Frame episode where Ibarionex Perello interviewed Eric Kim. Eric mentioned that he had recently been laid off from his job and was going to devote his time to street photography. The Khan Academy math videos are very popular and the Los Altos, CA school district is using them in an interesting way. Students watch the videos at home at their own pace and use classroom time for problem solving. Gareth Cook of the Boston Globe has more details on this approach. Assuming similar content is available, this method is a good model to consider for hybrid classes. Put the lectures online and use classroom time for other tasks that may require the teacher's expertise.
